Washing

Did you know that you don’t need to wash alpaca garments?

Alpaca fibre is naturally odour-resistant. To freshen up your garment, air it on a flat surface.

If you accidentally stained it, limit to washing the damaged area with running water (do not rub it off).

If you found a good reason to wash your whole garment, follow these instructions:

  • Always hand-wash with a natural soap or wool detergent in cold water.
  • Soak your knit for a few minutes and wash it gently.
  • Never rub or twist, natural fibres can felt.
  • Rinse and gently absorb the excess water using a towel
  • Air-dry flat on top of the towel away from direct heat or sunlight.
  • Golden rule: don’t ever put your alpaca garment in the washing machine unless it instructs that on the label.

keep moths away

Storage

If you look after your alpaca knitwear, it can last a lifetime, but be careful of moths!

  • Mothproof your wardrobe or drawers by cleaning them with detergent and by putting a lavender or cedar wood packs, to repel moth larvae eating your knits.
  • You can also store them away in an airtight container, ideally inside a cotton.
  • Don’t store them in a plastic bag. Alpaca and wool need to breathe. Fabric that is unable to breathe is susceptible to mould or unwanted odours.
  • Fold your knits, do not hang them as they can stretch.
  • If your knit has crease lines or wrinkles, you can get rid of them with a steam vaporiser for clothes. You can also hang it in the bathroom while having a hot shower!). Let it dry flat afterwards

do not panic

HOLES IN YOUR KNITS?

  • Jewellery.
Sometimes jewellery gets accidentally caught in your jumper which causes this to pull a stitch and then a “hole” appears. Easily fixable too!

  • Moths.
If you’ve found many holes in your garment, there could be a chance that a moth is eating your knits. Make sure you moth-proof your wardrobe. Read our Storage information

  • Strong detergents.
Normal detergent, these have strong enzymes to break up organic stains and they can deteriorate your jumper which is made of animal protein.

  • Natural wear & tear
Even the best yarn can have some weak points, which are places where the yarn is thinner and could potentially break with use. These are easily fixable with the spread yarn we sent with your knit.

Maintaining and repairing your knits

  • Pilling

Pilling is the natural process of forming small fuzzballs on a textile. It is not a product fault. This is caused by friction of the fibres during wearing.

You can easily remove pilling with our WOOL COMB

Simply lay your knit flat and gently glide over the knit using short strokes in the affected areas (armpits, sleeves, etc).

  • Repairing

We send a small thread with your knit to repair it if neccessary.
